The America Believed in…

patriots-loyalists-powerpoint-2-1-638The America they believed in… The patriots also known as the whigs were the colonist who wanted independence from English rule and wanted to start a new country.  Many of the patriots were famous people that we know today such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. When the Revolutionary War began in 1775 most people bandwagon-ed off of who was winning the war at the time because they were fearful. It wasn’t an easy decision, obviously. The loyalist also known as the tories were the colonist who wanted to remain loyal to Great Britain, the “mother country.” Famous loyalist that we know of today are John Butler and James Oglethorpe. Many people questioned themselves… “liberty or loyalty to the king?” Being a patriot during the Revolutionary War is a better choice because they wanted a fair government and had allies.

Because Britain had fought two wars and was in debt the colonist had to pay. Britain saw the colonist as a source for money. The king made the colonist sell Great Britain natural resources  for little money and buy the products back for HIGH prices. They started taxing everything. Britain, the  passed the Stamp Act that taxed everything involving paper, and the Declaratory act that taxed thing like tea, glass, and paint.  The colonist shouted “No taxation without representation!” Britain even made the colonist house the British soldiers, this was called the Quartering Acts. The first generation colonist still supported the king, although he taxed them ridiculously. The second and third generation colonists knew this was wrong though. On July 4, 1776 the colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. It wasn’t easy though, Britain went from 13 colonies to 0 colonies after the Americans won the Revolutionary war – they felt as if self government was the only solution.

Having allies during the Revolutionary War was beneficial to the patriots. “Benjamin Franklin was in France signing the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance.” (America’s Library 1) The Treaty of Amity and Commerce promoted trade between the U.S. and France and recognized the U.S. as an individual country.  The treaty of Alliance was an alliance formed during the Revolutionary War. If this alliance wasn’t formed between the U.S. and France the Patriots could have lost the Revolutionary War. (conditional)  “If you are an ally, then you feel a loyalty to some of the same social concerns and causes.” Your loyalty means that you do not turn your back when they call for help. This means that the French helped during the Revolutionary War and anything else the countries both had concerns on.

Although some people may think that is is a better choice to be a loyalist during this time it is a better choice to be a patriot. Some people may believe that the loyalist are a better choice because they had a better military and more control. Document 4 states that Great Britain had one of the best armies in the world, although Britain had many disadvantages.  England being almost 3,000 miles away didn’t help either… It caused a lack of communication between England and the loyalist, Therefore it was an advantage for the patriots when fighting.

In conclusion Having allies and a fair government were extremely important to the patriots. It caused America to win the Revolutionary War and made America well ya know , America. Because of the Patriots our country is one of the fairest and strongest. The Patriots were able to give us our Independence from Great Britain and give us our freedom. The importance of the patriots winning the American Revolution is that our country became free from Great Britain. I chose the patriots because our country was built on the Declaration of Independence due to their doings. So, are you a patriot? Or a loyalist?
